WOOHOO!!!! Got my new copy of the just released Blue Note reissue of 1998’s Combustication by Medeski, Martin, & Wood. Blue Note is cashing in, like everyone else, and I’m getting mine. I have a few of the originals but not this one because in the ’90s it was all about cds. Sigh.
OK, in fairness I need to say straight away that Medeski, Martin, & Wood aren’t your average trio. They like to play with a lot of sounds. It all fits into sweet grooves, no doubt, but this ain’t Sonny Rollins. One tune begins with a whole lotta weird chicken-sounding bullshit that will grow on you quick.
On this, their 5th album, and 1st on Blue Note, they add a ‘member’ to the band. They hook-up with DJ Logic and his turntable and the result is this sweet album that will be recognized for the awesome it is as long as we can argue about music.
WOW this groove hit you…I dropped the needle on side 1, track 1 a few moments ago and I’m having more than a little trouble typing. Although, my fingers seem to have found some sort of weird jazzerific groove and they are dancing around kinda without me. Only 2 words underlined in red thus far….
Your unfamiliarity with this amazing band ends now because I know you’re gonna run right out and get this album. I know it because, I know you’re they type of reader that doesn’t take the promise of stellar, mad-funk-a-sauras grooves lightly. And that’s what I’m giving you right now, that promise. You can’t wait. Get the album – play it! Invest in your happiness. Every second you aren’t grooving to this is another empty second of your life. <

I gotta go, my right leg is doing a thing and it’s not waiting for me to catch up.
Hurry, (wo)man!
